Job Description

The Hire Firm is seeking a detail-oriented and community-focused Accountant  to support the financial operations of a tribal housing authority in northern New Mexico. This role plays a key part in ensuring the fiscal health of housing programs that directly benefit local residents. You’ll join a team committed to service, accountability, and cultural integrity—helping deliver quality housing through sound financial stewardship.

Location

This is an onsite role based in a tribal community located approximately 25 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Occasional travel may be required for meetings, trainings, and professional development.


What You’ll Do

Reporting to the Housing Controller, the Accountant I performs a variety of financial duties to support the administration and operations of tribal housing programs and affiliated entities. Responsibilities include:

  • Processing accounts payable and payroll

  • Maintaining accounts receivable records for tenants and homebuyers

  • Preparing payment vouchers and verifying fund availability

  • Posting and reconciling cash deposits in the general ledger

  • Filing timely payroll tax reports and W-2s

  • Managing personnel and payroll files in compliance with applicable regulations

  • Reconciling general ledger accounts on a quarterly basis

  • Assisting with audits and preparing supporting documentation

  • Producing financial reports and project summaries as needed

  • Participating in trainings and workshops to stay current on policies and best practices


Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone with strong attention to detail, a passion for public service, and the ability to work well in a culturally sensitive and confidential environment. Ideal candidates will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field

  • Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience (tribal government or housing experience preferred)

  • Knowledge of GAAP and governmental accounting standards

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to manage deadlines, maintain confidentiality, and work both independently and as part of a team

  • Valid New Mexico Driver’s License

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and background check
